Federal Release Records for Piute
The Federal Bureau of Prisons system covers federal prison custody. It does not operate a Piute County facility and does not hold county or Utah state records merely because a person has a Piute connection. A federal conviction can lead to a BOP prison term, followed by release and possible federal supervised release. That later supervision is separate from UDC parole or Piute probation.
The BOP locator is a true released-person channel for federal prison sentences from 1982 forward. A result can identify the person, register number, demographic fields used for matching, release date, and location or status. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” with no facility, has a narrow meaning: BOP no longer holds the person. Another authority may still have custody.
| System | What it answers | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| BOP | Federal prison custody and released record | Sevier or UDC release |
| USMS | Federal pretrial custody and movement | Historic BOP release result |
| UDC | Utah prison and current supervision | Federal prison release |
| ICE | Civil immigration detention within locator scope | Federal criminal sentence outcome |
Search a Federal Release
Use the BOP Inmate Locator only after federal prison custody is established. An identification-number search is the strongest route. The locator accepts BOP register, FBI, DCDC, or INS numbers. A name search can be refined by age, race, and sex. Match several fields before deciding that a result belongs to the intended person.
- Choose the number search when a reliable federal identifier is known.
- Otherwise enter the complete name and use available refinements.
- Compare the register number, age, and other returned identity fields.
- Read the location or released label and the displayed release date together.
- Check the federal court judgment and supervision terms for legal context.
- Follow another custodian if BOP says it does not hold the person.
The Piute County released inmate records workflow explains how to identify the custodian before choosing a locator.
Read Federal Released Results
BOP results include a release function, but the label must stay within BOP's scope. “Released” means no longer confined by BOP. “Not in BOP Custody” means the same agency no longer holds the person. It does not establish freedom from all government custody or the end of federal court supervision.
BOP also warns that a displayed release date can change while First Step Act credits are recalculated. A future date should be treated as scheduled information, not a guarantee. Compare it again close to the event and use the federal court docket for the sentence and any term of supervised release.
- Register number
- The BOP identifier used to distinguish federal prisoner records.
- Release date
- The date displayed for the federal prison record, subject to BOP updates.
- Not in BOP custody
- A narrow agency status, not proof of release from every system.
- Supervised release
- A federal court-ordered period in the community after imprisonment.
BOP Locator Release Fields
The official locator capture below shows the number and name search routes used for federal prisoner records.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator is the source for this federal search interface.

The image supports the search fields, while a specific released result and the federal docket provide the case-level evidence.
Do not enter a Utah offender number into a BOP field and assume a no-result is meaningful. Federal and state identifiers belong to different systems. A county booking number also does not become a BOP register number.
USMS Piute Custody Movements
The U.S. Marshals Service manages custody and transport for federal defendants from court-ordered detention through acquittal or conviction and delivery to BOP. A federal defendant can be held in a contract jail. At that stage, the person may not appear as a sentenced BOP prisoner even though federal custody continues.
A person can leave Sevier on a federal writ or USMS movement and still produce no BOP locator result. Both absences can be true at once. Ask Sevier for the receiving agency and timestamp, then use the federal court or USMS route that fits the case. For a later sentenced prison term, switch to BOP.
Note: A federal writ or Marshals transport is continued custody unless an authorized federal record establishes release.
Federal Release Record Sources
The BOP locator supplies a public search result. The federal court docket supplies the judgment, sentence, and supervised-release terms. These sources answer different questions. A locator date does not explain every sentence calculation, and a judgment does not confirm the moment a prison physically discharged someone.
Name or federal identification-number search
Search BOP records
When identity or date accuracy matters, preserve the BOP register number and the displayed status. Check the locator FAQ for its scope and limitations. For an older or missing record, use the agency's current inquiry route rather than turning a blank search into a factual conclusion. Data before 1982 is not promised complete by the modern locator.
Federal supervised release can follow imprisonment, so leaving BOP does not necessarily end federal court obligations. Use the docket and supervising federal office for that later status.
Why Piute Has No Federal Prison
Piute's institutional history starts with the absence of a local jail. Current UDC material reports no Piute jail beds and routes sentenced Piute jail terms to Sevier. A 1998 Garfield plan mentioned emergency service, but it does not establish a current federal or county placement. No federal prison was identified inside Piute County.
That local fact prevents a common search error. A Piute arrest is not federal merely because a federal agency later becomes involved. First identify the arresting agency, actual jail, and court. Use BOP only for a federal prison record. Old references to Panguitch or a move away from Sevier do not prove BOP custody.
The receiving-agency field is the bridge. It tells the reader whether to continue with UDC, another county, USMS, BOP, or ICE.
Federal and Utah Release Boundaries
A BOP record should never be substituted for a Sevier release entry. If the person began with a Piute arrest, ask which facility completed the booking and whether that jail released or transferred the person. A transfer to federal custody remains custody. If the federal case ended before BOP sentencing, the court and USMS path may be more useful than the prison locator.
ICE also uses a separate locator. A BOP release does not prove release from ICE, and an ICE result does not resolve a federal criminal sentence. Each system uses different identifiers, time windows, and exclusions.
What does a BOP released date prove? It supports the federal prison event for that matched record. It does not prove the status of a Utah case or another custodian.
Missing Federal Release Results
A blank BOP search can have several causes. The name may differ, an identifier may belong to another system, the person may be in federal pretrial custody, the record may predate the locator's reliable period, or BOP may never have held the person. None of those possibilities proves community release.
Repeat the search with the full legal name and known variations. Use a federal register number when an official document supplies it. Then inspect the federal court docket for commitment, sentencing, acquittal, dismissal, or supervised-release terms. If the person was moved by USMS before sentencing, contact the proper federal court or custody channel rather than waiting for a BOP record that may not yet exist.
A county-jail booking can also continue while a federal writ is active. Ask the physical jail whether the person remains there or which agency accepted movement. The receiving agency is more useful than trying every locator without a custody lead.
Confirm a Federal Prison Release
Use two sources for a consequential date. The BOP result supports the federal prison status and release date. The federal court docket supports the sentence and any period of supervised release. If another agency took custody at the prison gate, that receiving agency controls the next status. BOP cannot certify another system's later event.
- Save the matched register number and exact BOP status wording.
- Check whether the displayed date is past or still projected.
- Compare the federal judgment and later docket orders.
- Look for a receiving agency or another active matter.
- Recheck close to the planned date because credit calculations can change.
For a Piute-connected person, separately resolve any Utah court case. A federal prison release does not dismiss a Piute charge, end Utah supervision, or prove what happened in Sevier custody. Keep the records tied to the agency that made them.
Note: “Released” is an agency-specific BOP status and should not be expanded into a claim about every possible form of custody.
